Egyptology and Ancient World Courses

Week 1 (30/7/12-03/8/12)

A choice of either Latin or Greek language,Ancient Egyptian culture,or short courses in Sanskrit and Akkadian

LATIN AND GREEK LANGUAGE (Beginner,Intermediate,Advanced)

Both Latin and Greek are being offered at three levels, all taught in small groups with experienced staff:

Beginner is suitable for those with no prior experience of the language,or for those who want to refresh the basics –teaching will be through a mixture of written tasks and interactive sessions which aim to give an understanding of how the language works at a fundamental level. By the end of the week, students will be able to form simple sentences and read short passages of adapted Latin or Greek. The text books used will be from Oulton’s,So you really want to learn Latin? (Latin) or JACT,Reading Greek (Second edition) (Greek).

Intermediate introduces students to more complex structures and vocabulary, building on the basics. As with Beginners, sessions will be a mixture of written and oral work which aim to reinforce students knowledge and work towards reading original texts.

Advanced is for those with a reasonable working knowledge of the language;students will read portions of original, unadapted texts throughout the week, discussing and revising grammatical points as appropriate. The choice of texts will be announced early in the Spring.

If you are unsure of which level is suitable for you, please contact Dr Amy Coker (a.coker@liv.ac.uk).
